Brightness slider not working at all

Hi, I was just reading things and suddenly my screen blacked out entirely. For whatever reason, I felt like I should shut down the computer and restart, and now my screen is permanently dimmed. I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit on a toshiba laptop, if that helps.
I've tried the power options menu and nothing worked. The brightness slider worked fine before, of course.

Hi Welcome to Seven Forums .. What is the exact Model Number of your Laptop ? Do your Function Keys work ?

Read the Link below and tap on each Key to see what effect it has ...

Also please perform a System Scan and Post the results ..

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Also, does it do this just on battery, or also when the power supply is connected?

If you change your power plan to High Performance does it change anything?

The function key works for anything except brightness, and the power plan option didn't work either. My battery was damaged somehow, so I haven't been using it lately, just having it plugged in.
I'm running a system scan as I type this post, just wanted to answer the other questions first.

Go to Power Options / Change Plan Settings / Change Advanced Power Settings / Scroll Down to Display / Display Brightness .. Can you change the percentage there ?

I changed the percentage, it didn't seem to do anything. Neither did the system scan, I'm not sure what's going on here.

I do not think you would have any problems if you had a Battery ... You did click on Apply and save ? I will have a search around and see what else i can find ...

I did hit apply and save. I took out the battery because my laptop was having overheating issues resulting in it shutting down, and for some reason taking the battery out stopped those. Brightness was just working fine until what happened yesterday.

The cause of a problem is not always found in a straight line. The battery could be a symptom of a power issue, not the cause of it. And a power problem could escalate the longer it lingers. The dimming problem could be the next stage in that power problem.

Sounds like backlight or inverter has gone in the screen. What is your laptop model? Try leaving it off for a couple hours not sleeping, then let it boot up to see if its dead or just dying.
