Can read CDROM, but not CD-R

I have W7 32bit with a DVD-RW drive that used to read/burn CD-R's fine, but now it won't do either. It will burn DVD's and read DVD's/CDROM's. Do you have any suggestions?

What CD drive is it?

Have you tried to uninstall,scan for new hardware,reinstall?

I have the same problem with Windows 64 -- it reads and writes DVD/DL/BR -- but will neither read or write CDroms. It simply whirls and clicks -- repeating about every20 seconds for about a minute. Dell 'took control' and uninstalled the driver (plus something in the registry) -- then reinstalled. Also they updated the drive BIOs. Still does not work. I borrowed a portable USB DL DVD/CDROM and the same thing happens!!!
I've convinced it's something in the Windows 7 64bit software.
Any ideas??

I think it's the OS

I have tried:
-- two different CD readers (different brands and one connected internal and one via USB external)
-- music CDs (comercial and that I made)
-- software CD (won't read CDrom to install software)
-- CDroms that I made with photos
-- variety of brands of cds

I remain convinced that the issue is within the Windows 7 OS.

What CD drive is it? Done. It's the Dell provided hardware - CD,+/-DVD-DL,BR capablity.

I'm still thinking OS at this point.
