Cannot access my old SATA hard drive

Hello all. I really need some help.

I just got a brand new Dell Inspiron 3542 laptop with Windows 7. My old laptop, a Dell 1545 Inspiron running Vista, died but I saved the hard drive (a SATA hard drive).

When I plug in my old hard drive to my new laptop, my new laptop recognizes it and a pop up box comes up to "open the folder and view files" for OS (F) and Recovery (E)

My files are on the F: one that comes up. I click on a folder under "Users" but it says I do not have permission to access it and I need to "click Continue to gain access". I do so and then a green bar takes a few seconds to load, and then it tell me I have been denied access. Then it says to click go to the security tab to gain access but when I click that, I get a big red X in a circle. Then the hard drive disappears from my Computer window and shuts off.

I really need some help because I have files I need from this hard drive. My even older Gateway IDE hard drive plugs in and works like a dream so I don't understand. Can somebody please help?

You might try taking ownership of the disk. Take Ownership Shortcut

Were you using Bitlocker, a password on disk or other security feature on the old disk?

    Another option is this

    BOOTABLE UBUNTU

Make a bootable Ubuntu disk http://www.ubuntu.com/download

Set the BIOS to boot from theoptical when the machine boots it will show you a screen with TRY or INSTALL> select TRYnot INSTALL

When it is finished - it takes verylittle time you will get a screen like in the pic .

Open the drive you want > Userand dig down until you get to the data / settings you may be able to copy /paste the material you want to an external source or other installed drive doingthis.

I am not sure if it will but I haverecovered tons of data etc using this method both on "dead" or justplain drives that you cannot get data from using Windows.

Thanks for the help so far. I wasn't using Bitlocker. I'm a little confused as to why I'd need to download something to access my old hard drive?

The suggestions are just to make it easier. You don't have to install/download anything. You can do it manually.

Right click on a folder of the old drive, select Properties.
Click on the Security Tab then click on Advanced.
Click on the Owner Tab then Edit.
In the Owner window, select the new owner.
Be sure to check the box "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects".
    Click Apply then OK out.

Use this for data folders only.

I only have about a minute after I plug in the drive to do anything before it disappears completely.

I tried to go to the security tab of one of my folders but it said "The requested security information is either unavailable or can't be displayed"

Sometimes plugging in the drive causes Windows Explorer to stop working until the drive shuts off and disappears from my computer.

    Any other ideas?

You didn't mention any of this before.

How is the drive attached? Is it in an external case connected via USB or are you physically installing it inside the new laptop? Is the laptop plugged into an AC adaptor or are you running off battery when this happens? And, I'm not sure what you mean by "disappears". Please explain.

Have you run any malware scans on your laptop?

I'll leave with carwiz mate as I made my suggestion as what to do and it is what I would do but if you are not willing to just make a bootable disk and try then it is your choice - good luck!

Sorry. I didn't know I couldn't do any of that stuff until I tried.

The drive is attached via a usb cable. It's a SATA drive. The laptop It is plugged in with the AC adapter when I do this.

The computer is brand new and I run frequent scans with Security Essentials.

What I mean by "Disappears": When I plug in the drive I can hear it running internally from its own ac adapter. I plug it into my computer and the Autoplay pop ups come up. There is a green bar that shows it is "loading" I guess? The green bar is in the Computer bar. Once the green bar gets to the end, the drive stops running and is gone from my Computer box.

    Does that make sense?
