Afterburner is widely used and many GPU utilities are based on it. Afterburner is basically an overclocking tool, but has some excellent monitoring tools incorporated into it, complete with on screen displays of most anything you could want as well as capability to set customized fan profiles and such. I would strongly suggest you not move the overclocking sliders on the front page though. Go into the settings for on screen display and fans and set up a profile where it shows what you want on screen during a game and set a custom fan profile to help keep the heat down. It could also be helpful to add a couple of good intake fans to your case if possible, to bring in more cool air. After all, it's the air inside the case that your graphics card is using to cool itself. The cooler that air is, the better off all your components will be.

Let's see how well we can control temps before running Furmark. Temps seem to be the issue at this point. Furmark will send them through the roof. Once we get temps down, then run Furmark is what I think I would do.

I made a custom fan-profile using MSI Afterburner and will continue playing games or whatever to see if the temps are under control. I did play earlier today though, after getting 81 degrees, and still find it weird that it would go THAT high.

I'd love to get some new fans, or maybe even water cool it. I think I'll have to get a new case before I'll do any of that though, and that wont happen in a while since I'm a poor student at the moment..

You can clean the dust from the inside with a can of compressed air (don't use an air compressor) and make sure the wiring is tied out of the way so it does not obstruct air flow. That can help a lot. Zip ties are your friend. But, seriously, 80C should not make it BSOD. Most cards can take that temp. It isn't desirable, but they can take it normally.

I'm not sure if it was a BSOD, but definitively a crash of sorts. Since it did make me have to hard-reset it using the power-button. Not sure if I mentioned it, but when it reached 81C my monitors went black, exactly as when it "BSOD'ed".

I've just played for an hour, and it did reach 70 degrees at some point, although it normally sat at 66 to 68. I don't really know much about temps and so on, so you decide if it's acceptable or not! :)

My current PSU is a standard one, so there's a TON of cables, I think I might get a PSU and a case as soon as I can, although that can be up to a month, easily..

70 is acceptable, depending on what game you're playing. You can always take the side panel off the computer and blow a house fan directly in it.

Hauk essenbe and Harry have some good material there to work and I agree the ambient temp is also very important ie if the room is at 78C it is going to hard to get it much lower than that.
Personally I have a thing about case fans and install as many as I can and the bigger the better.
An example is my Ivy Bridge has 4x200mm 4x140mm

It's usually pretty cold in my room, sadly..
Is it a good idea to try Furmark now and see what happens, or is it anything else I should do? :)
