USB ports in HP Pavilion Windows 7 not working

Hi There

All the USB ports in my HP Pavilion dv6-3122sa PC stopped working a few weeks ago. I tried to revert to a restore point but no luck.

I have now reinstalled the Windows 7 O/S and the USB ports are still not working.

Can you please suggest any resolution?
Thanks

Could be the ports have failed, they are part of the motherboard. I'd get a Linux LiveCD or LiveDVD .iso/image file to use in creating a bootable disc and boot to it, see if the ports work. There's several good ones and are free, I use the Linux Mint flavor, have version 13 on an older Notebook with Centrino [won't support a newer version] and version 17 on a newer Notebook. Doing so will determine if it's a hardwire problem or not. If not hardware then it must be the drivers for the motherboard such as for the chipset or other.

Many Thanks for your reply. I will try as suggested. If its a hardware problem, does it mean motherboard needs to be repaired or replaced?

If the ports are bad and are needed then the only repair is a new motherboard but may not be cheap and I don't know if a shop can be found to do the repairs. A new motherboard can run $150 and up, mostly up to as much as $350, I have junked a couple as the boards were priced at about $380.

Consider the age of the Notebook, it may be more cost-effective to just get a new one which should have 1-year warranty. I'd make a decision soon as the last I heard new computers with Win7 can still be had but may be ending in October. And No, can't use your OEM version of Win7 as it's tied to the motherboard identity.

Might be a long shot, but i've actually seen this work on a couple occasions when all usb ports fail

shutdown, remove battery, unplug AC adapter from wall, let computer sit over night. Then plug back in and try usb again in the morning
