Cannot Initialise Disk - Device not working properly

    Hi all,

I have a HGST Touro Mobile Pro portable HDD.
I have had it for 6 months and use it to store media which I play through my TV.
It worked fine until I plugged it in the TV on one day and it said it recognised a USB device, but it needed to be initialised.
I plugged it in the PC, it does not appear in 'My Computer' but it does in Disk Management where it says the device is Offline.
It says I need to initialise the disk prior to it becoming Online, but when I use the Initialise Wizard, it says "The device is not ready". I cannot get anywhere from here with the knowledge I have.
The light on the device does not turn on when I plug it in via USB (only option), UNLESS I plug it in before the PC is turned on. It also sounds like it is working mechanically.

    Any ideas please?
If the device itself is 'kaput', is there any sure way of retrieving the info off it?

    Thanks

    Hi

The first thing you should do is to replace the USB data cable. If you don't have a spare one, you may need to buy new one online. If the HDD shows the same error with a new cable, verify it's physical health by running diagnostic test. To do that, download "Seagate Seatool" from the below link ( it will work with all manufacturer's disk including Hitachi ).

    SeaTools for Windows | Seagate

Run the tool and choose your external HDD for testing. Then select "Basic Tests--> Long Generic" and report whether the test is a fail or pass.

Thanks for your advice Anshad. I will give that a go and post the results and go from there.

Ok, so I got a new cable and run the Seatools test.
It failed a long generic test with the following log I have attached.
There was 199 Bad LBA's that weren't repaired.

What does this all mean? Is my device stuffed and can I still get the data from it?

    Thanks

    Hi

Please don't bump as it is against forum rules. I am sorry for the late reply but as you know we are from different continents and different time zones.

Unfortunately yes. Your disk surface is suffering physical defects ( bad sectors ) and that is what caused the data loss. If the disk is under warranty period ( i think it is ), you can submit it for replacement.

We can try to recover the data but the chances of a successful recovery is less as the issue is physical failure.

    Ok thanks for your help.
As disappointed as I am, I don't think I'll try and recover the data. For the time, effort and probably money I think I'll cut my losses.
