internal vs external HD discrepancies are nagging me

My new desktop has a 500gb hd installed. I purchased a 1T ext. HD to back up the desktop. After doing a backup I noticed that the ext. HD has 555gb of used space. The internal drive has 150gb of available space remaining. What is going on here? Oh yes, and when I add up the folder sizes on the backup HD it barely makes 2gb's. Where are the files? This is nagging me to death.

What backup software do you use. Some backup softwares do sector by sector backup in which even unwritten bytes are backuped for exact restoration.
Most people in this forum prefer Paragon and Macrium. I
use Macrium. Its fast and compression of backup is awesome. It backed up 35gb system partition data into 10gb image file.
