Has the driver ever actually fully worked for you to back up data? if not; i would contact western digital and see what they say as it sounds like you could possibly have a hardware issue with the drive; especially if in fact it does say its unable to complete format.

    Hello,

You can use WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostics. You can run the "Quick test" to test the health of the drive. And you can use the “Write Zeros” option on the HDD. This will erase completely the HDD. Once done you need to go to Disk Management to initialize the HDD and format it.

    Hope that helps.

If the drive if failing the WD DLG Quick and Extended tests, that would mean that it's beyond repair. If it's still in warranty you should start RMA http://support.wdc.com/index.asp?lang=en
However If you are not completely sure about the results you could post some screen shots here so we can have a look or contact WD Live support.

I'm not sure why it's showing the SMART status as PASS, I guess it's because it actually could not retrieve the data ( the quick test is the SMART status), but this is not correct. I'm sorry to say that but this drive is unusable
