Why does Device Manager say my SATA HDD is SCSI

    Why does Device Manager say my SATA HDD is SCSI


    The particular HDD is a Samsung HD103SI. This is a SATA drive. It is connected with a SATA cable. My PC doesn't have any SCSI ports.

    But Device Manager - Disk Drives lists it as SAMSUNG HD103SI SCSI Disk Device.

    It works just fine. Except for one thing, which I don't need at the moment. I cannot make it an un-pluggable AHCI drive because somewhere along the line Windows believes that it is SCSI.

    Edit: I have 2 of these drives. If I plug the spare one in (a different SATA port) Windows lists it as SATA.

    Some drivers for some hard drive controllers will list SATA drives as SCSI.

    All works normally except that the system shows them as SCSI and it may indicate that they are removable.

    All my Marvell controllers (with Marvell drivers) list them as SCSI but I can turn off the removable function in the drive properties.

    Your answer made me check a few things. And think.

    I have 5 HDDs, a DVD writer and a set of SATA cables that hang out the box for quick plugging and unplugging the backup drives. (I have a backup drive for each of the 5 drives.) This is 7 devices.

    But only 6 SATA ports. So I have a plugin VIA SATA/IDE controller to get an extra SATA port. And the "problem" drive was connected to that. Hence the problem.

    So I have swapped the DVD writer and "problem" drive around and have the DVD writer on the plugin controller.

    Problem solved.

    It also means that my only SATA 3 HDD is now connected to a SATA 3 port. (I didn't know it was SATA 3 until I started exploring this "problem."

Several system information utilities I've run show the SATA devices as SCSI? Any reason? Here are two screen shots. One is from Speccy and the other is from AS SSD Benchmark.

Good evening, Just installed Windows 7 RTM and my Sata HDD's and DVDRW are reporting as SCSI devices. I would get this problem in XP if I installed the mobo's raid drivers by accident. If I did then the devices would report as SCSI and the dvd burner would report as a cdrom and would not burn...

Hey everyone. I am using windows 7 Rc1 7100 x86 hardware is asus a8n-sli motherboard which has a nforce4 sli chip set, 2x seagate hdd's 1 sata optical drive by LG but anyway the problem I have is that windows 7 isn't showing any sata devices in the control panel (see attached picture) ...
