CHKDSK freezes at startup

I have CHKDSK running at startup and when the "press any key to skip in..." prompt appears the system freezes completely when the counter reaches 1. If I press any key the system freezes instantly. I did a chkdsk /r in repair console and it did not found any problems, but the startup chkdsk prompt won't go away.

Is it possible to disable the chkdsk autostart with repair console or startup repair?

System is running 64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate and hard drive in question is 5x 500 GB RAID5 array.

Run chkdsk /f from elevated command prompt within Windows.

That should reset the flag so this won't happen any longer. As long as HDDs are normal, will work. RAID5 array not so sure. You may have something funky going on.

Run chkdsk /f from elevated command prompt within Windows.
The system freezes always at startup so it is impossible to get the windows on. Repair console is the only way to get a command prompt.

Find a way to boot from a live cd like some kind of Linux variant that has ability to edit Windows' registry. Or any utility that can edit the registry while Windows is offline.

Then edit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager

REG_MULTI_SZ value named: BootExecute.

Edit it to be exactly as shown, no differences or additional entries -

Code:
autocheck autochk *
OODBS

What if you just let chkdsk run and let it do it's thing, instead of trying to cancel out?

Anyways I managed to get the prompt off by falling back to last working point using install disk's system recovery.

Are you sure? Chkdsk can take MANY MANY hours to complete, often appearing to be doing nothing. On a large drive, 24 hours or more! is possible. Next time, start it up and go to bed.

I'm experiencing the exact same problem, I've just reformatted and absolutely nothing has changed except the startup GUI has come back and now it displays the counter until it freezes at 1 seconds...
Before I had the GUI disabled and it would just display some lovely pixelation at the top of my screen.

The drive is NOT dirty, I am positive of this.

It would be sweet if ANYONE could help out with this problem, it's very annoying.

Same problem here!

I have a Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium installed on a new HP DV8T with SSD drive. Chkdsk stops at one and does not go forward. This happens immediately off of a new install of windows. I can boot to the command prompt and fanagle it to stop running chkdsk with /f but this is not ideal. I want to know why chkdsk fails. The system is rock solid beyond this. I would really like to try a spinning HD and see if it occurs. I suspect that CHKDSK and the controller bridging to the SSD are in conflict.

UPDATE
I now have a second HP DV8T Laptop with 256Gb Samsung SSD drive incuding latest firmware (it is TRIM compliant). This computer has EXACTLY the same problem with chkdsk as my other DV8T Laptop. Both laptops have a second 7200RPM HD which I use as a backup drive. Please note that the CHKDSK fails with the OS right out of the box from HP! Also note that it fails after a fresh install of Retail Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium. So, I am 99% sure that the problem I am having is related to a compatability problem involving the drive, the drive controller, and chkdsk.

Please note that my rig is not in RAID.

*SNIP*

I have looked into this myself for a while, and have found many people that have this problem are using RAID (I have a RAID 0, and have the same problem). First I heard of a SSD, though. So, advice to anyone with RAID: don't try to use startup CHKDSK!

Here to help...

I was having this issue too.
Open any command prompt that you can (e.g. Recovery Disk, Safe Mode, actual Windows) and follow these instructions:

Note: Please replace "C:" with the actual drive letter of the system drive on which Windows is stored.

chkntfs /X C:

If you want to disable check disk on two or more drives, just keep on adding the drives:

chkntfs /X C: D: E:

This will disable check disk on C, D and E drives.

This is from a Microsoft SocialNet discussion, you can see it here: Windows 7 hangs at startup disk check (I'm not sure if it allows links, I guess we'll find out...)
Hope this helps...

Same problem here, fixed by a MS hotfix

Hi, I had the same problem today, when the counter gets to 1 it freezes on
"To skip disk checking, press any key within 1 second(s)."
...and then says nothing more (I waited 12 hours).

Microsoft has a hotfix called KB975778 that fixed this for me.
The Chkdsk.exe program does not start correctly on a Windows 7-based computer
With this fix, the above message then changes to
"Windows will now check the disk", and chkdsk continues, reporting progress as it goes.

After this fix, the checkdisk cycle ran TWICE, which was a bit worrying, but after the second time Windows continued to boot OK.

Also I should mention that immediately after this fix, I spotted my "RECOVERY" partition had disappeared from My Computer. Don't know whether this is related.
