Assuming you are using AHCI and using the default Microsoft driver, in regedit, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Services\msahci. It should only have one key - Enum. Add a new key Controller0.

In my case, I added 5 sub-keys Channel1, Channel2, ... Channel5. To each of these add a new DWORD. Call it TreatAsInternalPort and then set the value to 1. Now those HDDs won't show up in the Safely remove list. Only an HDD plugged into the channel not modified will show.
Uh...that totally confused me.

Yes I have a list that pops up with he letter of the drive and if I am not sure of the letter I check in Computer and it usually tells you not only the letter but also the name of it ie "My Passport" see pic

I am trying to avoid "accidentally" having the mouse-pointer move to the wrong drive just before I click.

Well the only suggestion I can think of is to reduce the speed of the mouse travel I have min set to fast but try slowing yours down to an acceptable speed.

In my pic it is slightly different in 7 where it shows Mouse and keyboard centre 7 will have a click speed option I lik to set that single and slow but you can have what you like.

I'll just be careful. But it would be nice to have a way to remove USB devices from the list.

Does anyone know how to remove the "safely remove hardware" icon in the taskbar? I do not mean hide it. I have my icons always show in the notification area because I don't like the arrow icon either. Any ideas? Thanks.
