Just another comment here on this topic...
Not having an anti-virus product installed isn't generally regarded as wise. The above recommended (and free) MSE product is probably the LEAST INTRUSIVE of the breed of such products. There are clearly some other VERY INTRUSIVE commercial non-free products, but MSE is essentially silent (unless it steps in to protect you from something, if your activities do something to make you susceptible) and injects almost zero extra overhead into your system.
I use MSE on all of my own machines, and have installed it on every other machine I've worked on for friends and family. I also make use of the "Windows Defender" equivalent now built into Win8. In my opinion, the product does the job it was intended to do, uses almost no system resource, and never bothers me.
If you don't have an AV product installed on your system, well... what can I say.
Furthermore, having Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium (in order to get regular database updates and provide other realtime protections) also installed is a second highly recommended protection. As was mentioned above, it's quiet unless stepping in to protect you from something or to block "phone home" access to malicious web sites from some malicious software you've somehow gotten installed into your system (probably from before you installed MBAM to protect you from this type of result), and also is perfectly compatible with MSE.
Again, I use MBAM on all of my own machines and the other machines I have been asked to "support". MBAM plus MSE is really a super-low-intrusiveness combination that provides the much-needed protections we all should have on our systems.
That's just my opinion.
