install new hard drive problem

I am running Windows 7 and just attached a new 4 TB internal SATA Seagate drive. When I booted, there was even a message that it was installed correctly. But when I look in the Disk Management, it shows "Not Initialized" and "Unallocated". That should not be a problem. So I right click on the disk and everything is greyed out except properties...not helpful! Then I right click on the left part (where it says "Disk 3", and I get a choice to "Initialize Disk" That seemed hopeful, so I clicked it and I get a choice of MBR or GPT. I tried both and after clicking each one, it still said "Not Initialized" and I was unable to allocate. I am CONFUSED...HELP...Thanks

Well; have you run the windows installation disc yet? If not; do that and follow the instructions it says to format the disk. If it does not give any indication to format the disk; or it gives another error its most likely because it has not been formatted yet which will allow you to install windows. And if it gives you a choice of mbr or gpt; you definitely want mbr. I have no idea what gpt is unless someone else out there does.

i think mbr has a limit of 2.1 TB, look at this thread gives some good info. Installing Windows 7 64-bit on 4TB hard disk

I think I was a little misunderstood. I am NOT installing Windows. I have a running system and I am just trying to get a new hard disk allocated and formatted. And even if MBR did have a limit of 2.1 TB (which I do not think is correct), then why didn't it allow me to initialize to GPT, the only other choice?

MBR indee has a 2TB limit per partition so if you want to use the new disk as MBR you'll have to partition it. Otherwise format it as GPT using this tutorial using option 2 or any other way you know

Sometimes things happen by magic. I rebooted and then was able to initialize to GPT and format the disk. All is well now....thanks

I was going to suggest checking for UEFI Support on your MOBO. That seems to be the issue that a lot are having. Glad to see you fixed your problem!

USB Flash Drive as Hard drive to install to.
Hi, I've got a Win RT 7 Install running and my only problem is that it doesn't see flash drives as drives to install the OS on to. I can see the USB drives for loading a driver so the installer already sees the USB drive but it won't list it for selecting a destination for the OS. So, I'm not...
