    Xeon compatible?

Not sure if this is in the proper section but here goes:

I'm still running a first gen i7-920 on a Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD4P, overclocked to 3.8GHz with a couple of GTX670s in SLI. Was thinking of keeping the graphics cards and SSDs and upgrading CPU to a 6 core XEON (which I would also try to overclock). Problem is that the X5650 through 70 does not appear to be on the Gigabyte site as a supported CPU BUT I've seen some threads implying that it will work with this board. Is there anyone that might be able to confirm that here?

Also, If I decide to just pick one up and try it, will Windows 7 x64 continue to run with the CPU swap or will it complain?

I'm actually confused, because according to the upgrade list, the x5650 isn't on there, but it is a Socket 1366 processor, which is the socket on your mobo. So I can't say for certain, but in theory it should work.

Also it shouldn't cause any issues with your OS, since you're only changing one piece of hardware.

Yup, that's why I'm confused also. Don't want to throw a $100 into this system for an old processor if I don't have at least a decent amount of confidence that it will work. Tried googling all over but just ended up finding conflicting info. I think it's just a BIOS revision issue if anything (to properly identify the CPU); the hardware side should be fine.

A link to another forum, looks like it works with latest bios revision.

Sweet! I don't now why my google search didn't pick that up but my Google-fu is lacking. Guess I'll try picking one up and seeing if it will play. Now... should go with the 5650 or aim higher?

Well if you want to go all out, might as well go for the 5690, but the 5650 is a pretty good upgrade already.

Yikes, those prices climb fast. I think I'll cut it off at the 5670.

I ordered an X5670 off of fleabay... will likely not get a chance to try it until the weekend of the Dec. 12. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Let us know how it works if you are going to do it, or have already done it!

Will do. The CPU got lost in the mail so I received it yesterday. Will try it this weekend.
