Guys

Can one of those hi-speed 3.0 thumb drives like a sandisk extreme or a Corsair GS do an adequate job as a fully operating Win7 OS?

Only Windows 8 Enterprise Edition is supported for using a flash drive for the OS. This is not a retail product and not normally available to a home user. I understand it has been done with other editions but I have no experience with such.

Well that's sad.

A different question.

Can a full retail home version of win7 or 8 be installed on an external SSD & plugged into other PCs in the house so to use the OS on the portable SSD?

As I mentioned previously, except for Windows 8 Enterprise edition this is unsupported. Depending on the hardware this may or may not work. It was not a part of the design specifications that this would work.
