Cannot install Canon printer; not recognised

I upgraded my XP system to Win7 Pro a couple of days ago, which entailed backing everything up and then installing Win7.
I have a Canon MG5450S printer and have been trying to reinstall the printer plus all the associated functions from the CD that came with it.
I don't use wifi connections so it is a USB connection-install that I need to do.

However, the installation disk runs through a certain amount, copies the set-up guide and presents it to me labelled mst-0001-frame.html. and then asks me to save or open it. When opened, it asks me to choose wifi or usb install. Having selected the latter, I get a message saying "the address was not understood. One of the protocols (mid) isn't associated with any program".
After trying several times, I also investigated the wifi instructions in this guide for the same problem, and that also failed.

I didnt have this issue when I installed under XP, so I have to assume I've got a Win7 problem. I've been on to the Canon UK site but can't see any suitable downloads as regards installing the printer.
In addition, the printer is plugged in at the moment to the computer via the USB hub, but the Printers and Devices section doesn't recognise it as a printer....only a mass storage device, for some reason.

Any ideas?

There is a Windows 7 driver listed on the Canon site. Have you tried this driver?

I downloaded from your link given, but unfortunately, when I ran it, it gave just a repeat of the same problem. But thank you for that. I am still stuck, however...

Use the System Restore and restore the PC back to an available restore date that is BEFORE you first attempted to install the printer. That will give you a clean start. Run the install and DO NOT connect the Printer to the PC until the install program tells you.

What model Vostro do you have?

Make sure you have enabled hardware driver auto updating as per this guide
Device Installation Settings
this should allow windows update to automatically install the device for you if possible

Dell has Vista 32 bit OS drivers which are also applicable to Win 7.

Although Win 7 will install many drivers, considering its a Dell and they have a history of needing Dell supplied drivers (I've done support on the Dell forums since 2002) I would recommend installing all the applicable Dell drivers, including the Intel motherboard chipset drivers.

Product Support | Dell US

FYI the correct install sequence for a Dell is (1) Install Windows (2) Install Dell Desktop (or laptop as applicable) System Software (3) Install motherboard chipset drivers (4) Install device drivers and optional software

Had you installed both the MP and XPS drivers? I believe you need #2 here for the MP driver (and the IJ Scan Utility - if you want to be able to use the scanner; off-network it sounds like). As well as #3 (XPS). The “IJ” (for WiFi/network, bundled), disregard those if you have the option and do not want or need wireless/networking connection. #4 through #9 are optional (install only what you need or want). #1 I'm not too sure about, I think that may be for WiFi/Network setup only. I could be mistaken.

I believe you also need to install the MP and XPS drivers before you attempt to connect via USB. Not sure why, but they do specify when and when not to attempt that (or at least they did for our Pixma MX340. Not sure if that's model-specific or not).

I'd help more in depth but I'm not downloading an .exe just for the manual...

Phew! Having taken all those details on board, I managed to download the two sets of drivers suggested by Magus, and eventually got them installed. I don't think I'd have considered obtaining both if it hadn't been pointed out. The printer is now visible in Devices and Printers, with a large "tick" and also it's in the correct place and no longer identified as a mass storage device. It prints out fine. I haven't checked the scanning yet, but hopefully that'll be ok and I'll look tomorrow (I'm worn out now!)
Re the Dell drivers, I'll check that over tomorrow as well. Thanks to all. I think it's solved.

Printer not recognised
I used to have an HP printer and the PC suddenly stopped recognising it intermittantly. I had to turn off and unplug the PC (not the printer) to get it recognised. I thought it might be because the printer was getting a bit old so I bought myself a new Canon printer. Now it has started doing the...
