getting an ide hard drive to work on windows 7

need some music and few other bits off my old ide hard drive.

ive got an ide to sata adapter but it doesnt seem to be picking the hard drive up. do i need to take out the jumpers on the slave setting completely or doesnt it matter that they are in

also noticed that it doesnt sound as if it is spinning on power up. it worked last week when i needed it for a file off, but dont seem be working now. whats the best way to get the things i need of it if it wont spin?

If you use a USB adapter with an IDE HD, the jumpers have to be set to master or single to work to see the drive when you plug in th USB adapter

That is the first time I have seen one of those type adapters. Could there be a lack of proper power to the IDE HD if it's not spinning ? I still think the proper jumper settings could also be a problem.

As Doc said, check all the cables.

    right a quick update

borrowed my friends external case for a ide drive, plugged it in and its now spinning, but says it has 0 bytes and not 120gb and says i need to format it before i can use it

how can i do this if i need some stuff off it, are there any good disk scavenger programs that would enable me to retrieve stuff off the hard drive once ive formatted it, or is there a way around this issue so i can get the things i need?
