Is there anyway a virus can cause this type of thing? Just throwing that out there? Or maybe desperate, lol.

Highly unlikely.

If you want to test to see if there is any life in the drive, or if you can access it to recover files, you could take it to a desktop PC and plug it in as another internal drive and see if it is recognized and readable there.
Or you could take it to a computer repair shop and have them test it.

And any suggestions on replacing a hard drive for a reasonable cost?

I want to thank you again for all your help. Even though the results were not as I had hoped, at least I know for sure!
Very much appreciated!

I like Newegg: Computer Parts, Laptops, Electronics, and More - Newegg.com

Laptops usually use a 2.5" hard disk drive. And unless this laptop is very old it will be a SATA drive.
There may be an adapter fitted on the standard hard drive that you can re-use for the new hard drive. This is used to connect the drive to the laptop.

If you care to spend the money an SSD with greatly increase the performance of the laptop.

Amazon is also good IF you know exactly what product you are looking for.
