Cannot Delete Bonjour Created Printers

That's OK. If you do not have much experience with Macintosh, some of that would probably look like Sanskrit. However, I do want to clarify some points from my last post which I feel were not clearly expressed.

First off, printer setup in CUPS. I wanted to clarify that if you are needing to set up a local printer in CUPS for purposes of sharing over a network with Windows PC's, make sure that you select the RAW printing protocol from the list during printer setup. This provides the WYSIWYG printing between the Windows PC and the Mac printer. In this way, the data is sent directly to the printer without any interference.

Second, if you are using Windows 7 Professional, you probably will be able to install a printer using the Bonjour client which is attached locally to a Mac without any further configuration on the Mac. I am not saying that this will definitely be the case, but it is possible. However, Windows 7 Home Premium is different. I could not get Bonjour to install the printer correctly, as the client would not configure the IPP port correctly. There do seem to be differences between the network components of both editions. As a result, I would not personally recommend using Bonjour with Home Premium. Use the Windows Add Printer wizard instead.

But remember, if a printer does not install correctly in either of the Windows 7 versions, or if you decide at some later date that you would like to remove a functioning printer for any reason, you are stuck with having to manually remove the printer from Windows through the registry. This is not a good thing. So, I recommend not using Bonjour with Windows 7 at all, at least until Apple decides to update Bonjour properly for use with Windows 7.

I see; that did clear up a lot; so thank you! Actually, I prefer Macintosh over Windows PC's (as does my family and all of their macs :\), however I bought my PC for a few compatibility issues, and have made it my main computer until I can afford the money for a wonderful new top-of-the-line / latest Apple computer. But until then... =(

o_O This is brilliant. I had no clue; and yup, the printers made from Bonjour seem to all have an (@) sign in them. Thanks very much for that!



I know there are websites such as MacWindows, however I have a feeling it would benefit all of the people with these problems if we started a temporary Wiki or something of the sort that can easily be found by a Google search or other search engine... -_-; I'd be happy to help out with that, I suppose. Until this problem is fixed by the companies.

Thank you, Praefectus. That's the first time I've actually taken a look at the printer dialog in Notepad for Windows 7. The add printer wizard is even available through that dialog. And, you can right click on the printer and select delete. That is nice. Strange, but nice.

An Update:

I recently reformatted my computer (yes, again ._.). Somewhat to my surprise and much to my dismay, when I tried to reinstall this printer (Canon PIXMA MP780) to my computer from the iMac on our home network, using Bonjour Printer Wizard and all, it was not working how it did before...

To those of you who my previous solution did not work, I have just discovered another one which made me very happy.

First, when I did the whole "Windows Update" thing to update the list of printer drivers that were available on the standard "Add Printer" thing in Windows 7, it did update the list, but like it used to be, it would always have the same line of Canon printers and skip JUST MY OWN MODEL NUMBER. Like a ghost trying to annoy me like heck. .\_/.

Anyway, it didn't matter because when I went back to Bonjour Printer Wizard to install, none of the updates were in that list! But they were still in the Windows 7 normal Add Printer list of drivers. .... So no help came from that, which did not happen last time! Hmmm. I even uninstalled and reinstalled Bonjour two times to make sure I got it right!

Now, THE SOLUTION. First make sure you have read my first one, some posts back. Then if it doesn't work, try this.

1. Install the printer that you want with Bonjour Printer Wizard, with any driver at all, it doesn't matter. It could even be from another printer company for all I care.
2. Go to your "Devices and Printers" window thingy. Right click on the printer you just installed, and click on Printer Properties.
3. Click on the Advanced tab.
4. Where it says "Driver:" on the far right of that, click on New Driver. You will probably have to do another Windows Update thing, as I had to, but it got even my printer listed on there. Works like a charm!
5. My only dilemma is deleting the driver it was first installed with... that one is getting to me; can't seem to do it.
6. Oh yes, and make sure that under that same Advanced tab, you set the selected Driver to the one you just added.
