    Intermittent boot error

    All

Well, my other PC now has a boot issue.

Sometimes it will boot okay, sometimes with it will fail POST with 3 short beeps. Sometimes it will load Windows and sometimes it will hang on the starting Windows screen. Sometimes it will system restore...

I've removed all PCI cards, reset the memory. I've run SFC /scannow when it did eventually load Windows - no issues. I've run windows Mem diag - no issues. I've switched off Auto install Windows Updates, in case it's an update issue. Run multiple Virus scans - no issues.

I'm wondering if there are two separate issues here, one hardware and one with Windows but it does seem a coincidence that both happened at the same time.

    Spec:

    Windows 7 - 64
    ASUS I5 4670 Z87 motherboard with 8GB of Ram
    840 EVO SATA SSD 250GB
Zotec GTX 650 Ti Graphics card
    Corsair 650W PSU
    Creative Labs X-Fi Xtreme Audio

My only idea is to reinstall Windows and see if that resolves the Windows hang issue but the intermittent boot success has me confused as normally this works or doesn't in my experience

    Any ideas welcome...

Ok UK you didn't mention a chkdsk mate try that
https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html < if necessary include the /f and /r in the command line as per Option2

My older computer used to have a three beep code that indicated a RAM problem but this is worth a look at as it depends what BIOS you have Computer POST and beep codes

Thanks for that idea, I had not considered that option as I have an SSD but will try now.

    A quick update:

I completed the ChkDsk and thought the problem had gone away but after 1 week with no problems, both issues have returned. Yesterday, I had one post fail with 12 beeps, which then rebooted and gave 3 beeps, followed after a third boot with a POST pass - only for Windows to fail to boot. When I powered off the PC for 30 secs and booted, it started fine.

Yep well I have to sit and wonder sometimes when a simple reboot solves stuff and many problems are not linked with the cause ie security settings or bugs stopping stuff working and yet we pay for it all
