Hi guys, I currently have a samsung m471b5273ch0-ck0 4gb stick in my laptop, but have come across a samsung m471b5273eb0-ck0 4gb ram stick in a faulty laptop, and I am wondering if they are the same specs, so I can mix them.

If your laptop supports a max of 8Gb or more, you should be able to use both without problems. :)

When I insert the memory, if it shows on my pc as 8GB, rather than the current 6GB, does that mean the ram is working correctly, or is there a test to do?

entering the bios will show more detailed info but yes if you look at system section in control panel and it shows increased ram level then you should be good to go
If you want to check hardware etc personally I use speccy, it has a portable version so doesn't need installing and will tell you everything you need to now about your hardware including ram capacity/timings/speed
