Secure Virtual Machines is one of the components Avast installed for me when i updated from 2014 to 2015.
I have the free version, so i shouldn't even have the choice of installing it (as far as i know), but it did get installed.

That's what I commented on in my post here:
Windows 7 Home Premium keeps changing System Restore allocation amount

If you don't have it, maybe it isn't Avast that is causing your issue ???

I just uninstalled Secure Virtual Machines using Programs and Features (bloody nice of bloody Avast to make it so easy to find ). I'm going to reboot in a bit.

Yeah, the dirty ba...persons of questionable heritage. It took for-bloody-ever to reboot. My computer had to configure Windows updates (say what?) then do some cleanup before it finally got to the login screen. Yeesh!. I checked shadow copy again and got this:

My free space is now at 52.3GB! Woohooo! Yesss! Now to see how long that will last.

Thanks, everyone, for all your help!

If I were to be smart or dumb enough to try Avast, is there a way to NOT install that virtual machine thingy at all, at the time of first installation?

Or do you have to install it and later try to uninstall it?

I should probably stick with MSE, but I have this overwhelming urge to not leave well enough alone.

Great hearing you got your free space back !

I wonder why you can't set Max space smaller ?
Maybe whs or others will have some ideas ?
Have you run a SFC lately ?

I don't remember if I was given that option or not (at my age, the only thing I retain well is water!). Uninstalling the little bugger was easy once David pointed out where it was and how to get rid of it.

I've used Avast for several years now and this is the first real problem I've had with it (of course, it had to be a really sneaky one).

    Thanks!

I might be able to reduce the max space now but, frankly, 2.31GB isn't going to harelip the mayor and the governor so I'm not going to worry about it for now (if ever), especially since I've got a bit of a sinus headache and it's past my bedtime.

    SFC? Meesa no unnastand.

sfc /scannow at a command prompt to check integrity of system files.
