    HDD got slower

I did benchmark on my WD Blue 1TB a month ago with read and write around 135mb. Today i ran benchmark again and now read and write is down to 99mb. WTH is going on?

i have ran wd diagnostic on my hdd and its healthy. Does it have anything to do with how full hdd is? I only have about 70gb left, the test before had about 500gb.

What application did you use to benchmark the drive?

I used two benchmark, ASSSD benchmark and userbenchmark on my system both had the same result. Does it slow down as you fill up the hdd? i only have 70gb left, test i had before had 500gb.

I wouldn't expect a drive to have the same rates at all locations on the drive or at all capacities. Both the heads and the platters in the drive are in constant motion.

But I can't tell you outright that nothing is wrong.

Those numbers you quoted are in line with my WD drives (Green series; I have a 1 TB Blue, but I have not benchmarked it).

You could Google to see what performance others are getting from a 1 TB Blue.

Im seeing alot of numbers around 150mb for read and write. 100mb from today benchmark seems low, i mean i had around 135mb before. I still dont get why the such large drop.

Have you been connected to the same motherboard port for all tests on this drive?

Other than that, I can't help you any further. I do have some old tests on some of my drives and I do see some variation, but not as much as you report--over 20 percent.

Same mobo, same port nothing has changed. WD diagnostic says healthy, im not sure if i should be worried. Kinda sucks i lost so much performance. Ill keep an eye out maybe run benchmark once a week to see if it changes. Btw does defragging my wd blue help?

Fragmentation normally makes very little difference unless it's extreme.

But yes, I would use Windows built-in defrag tool. You can have it analyze the drive and tell you the percent of fragmentation and then defrag if you think it's excessive.

My spinning drive are on auto-defrag once a week and are never above 5% fragmented and are usually at 0 percent.

I'd be surprised if it helps, but you should defrag to satisfy your curiosity if nothing else.

    Hi there.

    I agree with the video.

Basically speaking hard drives do slow down not with age, but as you fill them up. Generally Writing to HDD starts on the out edge of platter(s) where max performance is. As more and more data/files/programs are added, the data starts becoming closer to the center of the disk and angular velocity decreases and as more is written to the disk (for instance about 75%) full preformace can drop off to where it is noticable. With 75% filled HDD if you do a defrag on the drive you will fill the outer 75% of the disk. The programs closer to the outer edge show be as fast as when it was new, however any new programs added and new data added will appear a little slower.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers! :)
