Thanks Ignatz. I will look into that. I guess you meant PSU rather than CPU.
    You are correct; my error.

I've measured my actual power draw from the wall on my PC (with a 95 watt TDP, the same rating as your 4790K) and it is typically 80 or 90 watts, idling or at low load.

Under a full-bore stress test designed to maximize power draw, I reached a maximum of about 160 watts. That's higher than I'd ever reach in actual usage.

That includes 3 internal hard drives, 2 RAM sticks, DVD drive, 23 inch monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Nothing in the slots.

In a warm room (27 C; 80 F), my CPU temps are in the mid 30s at idle. Motherboard around 40. Drives in the low 30s. With one 120 mm intake fan and one 120 mm exhaust, both low noise.

In my experience with no video card, your intake and exhaust fans are likely to be the biggest sources of noise unless your CPU fan is working hard, say above 1500 rpm--which shouldn't be often. So, do what you can to get low noise fans.

You can easily get a quiet CPU cooler as well, even without going to a tall-ish tower unit. Scythe and Noctua make some good prospects.

Pretty easy to keep the overall noise beaten down nowadays if you start with quiet components in a good case.

Thanks Ignatz for all that good input. I am not sure what the PSU rating in the Inspiron is, but I would guess it is 250 or 300 Watts. If it has the correct rails, it may stay.

Regarding the noise I might opt for water cooling for the CPU. That should produce the least noise.

If you go with a Corsair hydro cooler make sure to buy a couple of different fans, the ones supplied with the kit are unbelievably loud.

Yeah, noise is the last thing I need. Thanks for the heads up.

I think I have enough input now. I thank everybody for their contributions. Now I have to first get back to Germany (on 5/5) and then I will discuss it with the boys there. They are real pros.

Just a heads up. All the OEM manufacters use BTX motherboards with the CPU mid board towards the front. All the motherboards generally on sale are ATX or Micro ATX which follow a different panel mounting. BTX boards are built so the right side of the case comes off to get at the innards which are basically reversed. (Video Card fan facing up). The BTX is a mirror of ATX so be very careful as the boards may not fit.

Thanks Tony. Another monkey wrench to study.
