HDD check?

Thanks for posting practical questions.

1. I have a 320 GB WD HDD each on both desktop (Blue) and laptop (Black)

2. 2 Partitions C 100 GB and rest D.

3. Windows and all apps use 35 GB of 100.

4. 60 GB the data etc occupies of the 220 GB.

5. Looking at that 240 GB SSD can do for me, giving W7 60 GB and the rest to data.

6. Both cant hold another internal HD but can have a usb attached if required.

7. Desktop's WD HD is real slow 54K 8 MB, but laptop's 72K 16 MB isn't bad.

8. have 2 options replace both 320 GB with 240 GB SSD OR swap lap's 72K into desktop and used SSD for lap.

I gather you've never used an SSD.

Do you spend an equal amount of time on each machine?

Do you do pretty much the same tasks on one as on the other? Or do you do certain things on only 1 machine?

Are these 2 machines generally healthy and not in immediate danger of being retired?

Ignoring their hard drives, do they have about the same power and usability--CPU speed and general satisfaction?

Do you have any other use for the 2 existing hard drives if they were replaced with SSDs? If nothing else you could put them in an external hard drive dock as needed and use them to back up what is on the internal drives. A dock might cost $30.

Obviously--if money is of little or no concern, you should put SSDs in both today. But I assume you are somewhat budget conscious and am trying to gauge that.

2. More time on desktop.......laptop is kind of a back up though better in hardware.....feel comfy on desktop.

5.Lap is more powerful....T7200 vs T2400, 4 vs 2 GB RAM, vid card vs internal graphics.

6. True no use of the existing drives.

Here's what I would probably do, assuming you don't want to go off the deep end with both machines.

Buy 1 SSD and put it in the desktop, since it's where you spend most of your time.

I gather you are now using about 95 GB of the 320 on the desktop--35 for C and 60 for data.

I assume you aren't going to change habits or tasks for this machine in any major way, so that the 35 for C and 60 for data aren't growing quickly.

So, get a 240 gb SSD, give maybe 80 to C and 180 to D.

If you think that crowds you and that those partitions might fill up quickly, you could:

1: step up to the next size, 480 to 500.

or

2: don't use multiple partitions, keep data on C. This is more efficient and less likely to leave you crowded, but it lacks the known advantages of keeping Windows and data on different partitions.

Another alternative:

Get an 80 or 120 gb SSD for C only. Keep all data on externals, possibly on the WD Blue that you pull out of the desktop. Put that drive into a dock.

It's peculiar that you say your desktop cannot accept a second hard drive. Not sure I ever heard of that. You should be able to leave the WD drive where it is and put the SSD damn near anywhere in the interior, attached by Velcro or tape if nothing else. They are very light, with no moving parts, and can fit pretty much anywhere.

If I owned your desktop, that's what I'd do--keep the Blue for data only, buy an SSD (probably no larger than 120 GB), and keep both inside the desktop. Why can't you do that?

Where would the page file reside in either circumstance......if SSD is partitioned or not?

Page file is typically on C. You could relocate it, but ordinarily there's no reason to do so. Likewise, you could resize it if it would save you some much-needed space.

Don't commit to an SSD without first posting about what brand and model you have in mind. Newegg's a good place to price them. You can normally get a 120-128 GB for $65 to $80.

Intel probably the brand with the fewest complaints. Not the fastest but you'd likely never notice the difference. Good customer service, good included tools. Usually more expensive than others at any given capacity.
