Windows 7: All hard drives and dvd drive disappearing randomly

11 has two cables both connected to the motherboard
2 is connected to all 3 hard drives
6 is connected to 3 fans for the case
9 and 10 are both connected to the video card

Before i had #3 connected to all 3 hard drives and the dvd drive as well, with nothing being connected to #2. So far it seems to be working still.

Ah, this may be where the problem is lying!

Personally I wouldn't run all 3 hard-drives off one module, too risky and puts strain on one module.

What I suggest:

  1. Connect a supplied lead to #1 and connect to it: Your Operating System HDD
  2. Connect #2 to the other 2 'slave' hard-drives
  3. Connect a supplied lead to #3 and connect to it: DVD Drive
Note: Turn off your PC and disconnect it from the socket before carrying out the above instructions.

This should split the load on the PSU to a safe amount.

Please try this and let me know how you get on!

Well after a few hours of it seeming to be alright, the hard drives disappeared again. There were a few times where it locked up for a minute also, but they didn't disappear for a while at least.

Okay, so we can say that the PSU was causing part of the problem but now we have isolated that so we can move onto the problems in the software.

Most likely this is caused by a bad block on one of your hard drives.

Can you follow the steps below and let me know the outcome:

  1. Download CCleaner: CCleaner - Download
  2. In CCleaner there will be 2 tabs - 'Windows' & 'Applications'; in 'Windows' tick/select the settings as I have attached in a picture below, In Applications, tick/select everything.
  3. Press 'Run Cleaner'
  4. Then go to the 'Registry' Window: Scan For Issues > Fix Issues > Make A Backup (on your desktop) > Press 'Fix All'.
  5. After this Download Defraggler: https://www.piriform.com/defraggler
  6. Open Defraggler > Select a Drive > Analyse (Please make a note of Fragmented Files in GB and post here) > Defrag
  7. Repeat Step 6 for all drives - Except SYSTEM RESERVED - If it shows up in the list.
  8. After this, go to: Start > Type in 'cmd' > Right-click on 'cmd' > Run as administrator
  9. Type: SFC /SCANNOW > Press Enter - Let this run fully.
  10. Restart the PC
Please note: defragging will take some time, please be patient.

Thanks

SSDs don't need defragging whatever the fragmentation. System restore does run a defrag on even SSDs once a month anyway.

It seems like everything has been going well so far. I did a defrag on the WD which took all day, but it had a good 25% fragmentation. But I think what actually fixed it was removing the sound card from my computer. I forgot I even had it in there since I wasn't using it for anything.

Good to hear! So it was a driver conflict then?

Since this has now been resolved, please use the Mark this thread as solved link at the top of your thread.

Recently a 500GB SATA drive, which had behaved perfectly in two years of constant use, and on which I kept my Steam games folder, started to disappear from My Computer and from Disk Manager.
