WD My Book 3TB Ext HDD - Unknown - Not Initialized

    Hello,
New here to this forum. Been searching and reading for the past week trying to get my HDD to work.

I was able to access my external HD about a week ago, watched a movie off it and fell asleep. When I awoke the next morning, powered on my laptop, it wouldn't boot up so I shut it down and unplugged the HD and powered it back on. Plugged the HD back in, computer sees it but not showing in My Computer.

Within Disk Management, it shows Disk1 - Unknown - Not Initialized.

Searched and searched and searched for different solutions, tried different things and still nothing. I have tried PW but not showing up to be able to scan it. I have a docking station so I pulled the HD out and plugged it into that. PW was able to see it but no partitions found. Tried to run TestDisk (per some other help treads instructions) with nothing found.
I have ran EaseUS recovery, recovered some files but none which were readable.

I have lots of important files on this HD and I really need them. Sending it to a professional is out of the question.

I'm currently about to boot up pendrive and see if it sees anything there.

I can post any screen shots and try anything again. I have done nothing but scans scans scans.

    Thank you!

    Hi HAPPYSOk,

    Welcome to Seven Forums.

I would have been happy to help you had it not been a Western Digital External drive.

Is your drive's model No. this WDBFJK0030HBK?

Your drive is hardware encrypted and should the interface card that contains the encryption chip and the decryption key fail, even if the HDD itself is good, you can't get your data out by hooking it up as a second drive in a dock or sata connect on a desktop. You can get what data is there inside but it will be the encrypted data.

Your statement "I have ran EaseUS recovery, recovered some files but none which were readable." confirms this.

The only way you can get your data back is to send the enclosure and drive to the Western Digital patronised Data Recovery Partners listed by WD here WD Support / Data Recovery Partners. Only they have been supplied with the decrypt key by WD and they will do it in a jiffy for you.

Free consultation, So get a quote from them and you will never again buy a WD drive, I am sure.

Jumanji, reading this I got suspicious :)

I have WD Passport 1TB USB3, model is WDBACX0010BRD - 01. Just searched google and got some results, however I can't be sure if they are the same thing. Does this one have the hardware encryption you mention as well?

Western Digital My Passport 1TB USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive - Red (WDBACX0010BRD-NESN) is hardware encrypted. See the features and specifications here Western Digital My Passport 1TB USB 3.0 Portable... : Target

According to this page External Portable Hard Drives Overview only WD Elements portable does not have hardware encryption.

In the Desktop Externals also only WD Elements Desktop does not have hardware encryption.

Good to know, thanks for your time.

I use this one for secondary backup of daily images. I will keep a couple more images on the internal backup drive from now on.
