It seems that my motherboard is out of date when it comes to USB 3. I will eventually upgrade and hopefully USB 3 will be more readily available.

As Pauly alluded to, no matter what connection you use, it will always be limited by the write speed of what you are transferring to. No matter how fast your connection is able to transfer data, you can't transfer it faster than the device you are connect can write. There are other factors involved too, but that is the primary one.
I am transferring files from my Sata 3 HD and my SSD. My external HD is listed as USB 3 and reviews I have read suggest it works fine as a USB 3 device. I'm getting between 2 - 25mb/sec. My equipment can write faster than that surely.
