    bad sector repair

How do I see whether chkdsk has repaired a bad sector?
Before running chkdsk, crystaldiskinfo (using smart) showed current pending count: (raw value)2
After running chkdsk, crystaldiskinfo showed still current pending count: (raw value) 2

Bad sectors aren't repaired. They are retired and marked to never be used. Spare previously unused sectors are brought in to replace the retired bad sectors.

Is that raw value from Crystal hexadecimal?

Go to Crystal function menu/advanced feature/raw values and make sure that is set to 10 [Dec]. Does it then still show as 2?

You might want to run Western Digital's disk tools instead of checkdisk.

When the drive detects a bad sector during a write operation it is able to immediately replace it with a spare, effectively "fixing" the problem. But if the error occurs during a read operation the problem is more difficult to solve. As the correct contents of the sector is unknown (and at present unknowable) the sector cannot be immediately replaced. The sector is added to the "Current pending sector count" list. To be replaced one of the following must occur:

    1. The sector is later successfully read and it's data obtained.
    2. The sector is written to with known data.

The problem is that there is no assurance that either event will ever occur. There really isn't anything you can do about this. Writing to the sector would cause it's replacement but that would result in the loss of it's contents, which may be important.

A small number of "reallocated sector count" or "pending sector count" doesn't necessarily mean the drive is dying but you should continue to monitor the situation. If either strts to rise this could indicate an internal problem and the drivre would need to be replaced.

But above all else be sure you have a backup of all your data. Any drive, new or old, can die at any time, often without warning or apparent cause.

Chkdsk log showed 4kB in bad sector.
I suppose this is 4kbyte data in bad sector and not 4000 bad sectors.correc?

The log refers to 4KB data in bad sectors. With the standard cluster size of 4K or 4096 bytes(which is almost always used) that would mean 1 bad cluster. If there are 2 bad sectors they must be in the same cluster. Chkdsk, like just about everything in Windows, works only with clusters, not sectors.

You would have a chance to repair bad sectors if it is a Seagate or Maxtor drive (if I remember right). SeaTools for DOS and Windows - How to Use - last 3 screenshots.

If I understand correctly, both Crystal Disk Info and Western Digital say your hard drive is having problems. No matter which one you want to believe, I would make sure my data is backed up if you can and be making plans for a replacement. The extended tests are usually the most accurate.

As essenbe has said, backup your stuff and replace the drive. If it's starting to go bad it's only going to get worse.
