Not initialized Western Digital Elements

Hi all,

I have a Western Digital Elements which has been working properly. This morning when I connected it to my laptop, i heard few weird 'tik tik tik' sounds when it was connected to laptop. Then the laptop could not detect my hardisk.

I tried connecting it to other laptops but the problem still persists; hardisk not detected and the tik sound.

I went to Google the solution but could not find suitable one. In the disk management, my hardisk is shown as not initialized and unknown, but there was no unallocated space at the right hand side as indicated by some other users.

Attach is the screen shot of my disk management, anyone please kindly help!

I am ready to give up my hardisk, but I just wanna get back my data inside, thanks!

It's either the hard drive or the enclosure. It's time to take the enclosure apart and try the hard drive on another usb adapter or on sata within a tower.

Hi paul1149,

Can you please elaborate more on what you have mentioned?

I am more concerned on data recovery rather than the hardisk, so if possible please advise on how to recover the data, thank you!

Hello weibing86!

I'm sorry for the problem with the Elements!

Is this the portable or desktop version? Please check the full model of the drive.

Usually connecting a drive directly to the system could help, but I wouldn't advise trying to disassemble the WD Elements, as it will void its warranty!

The problem is caused by an error with either the enclosure or the partition of the drive. The data is most probably still there but the system can't read the drive correctly or access it. You could try changing the cable with a new one, but your best option is data recovery.

You could attempt that by yourself at home, but this could harm the drive/data even more. Professional data recovery would be at best. WD has partners in the field.

You could also check if you could RMA the drive.
