I managed to get the Linux driver nvidia-304 and nvidia-340 installed and working using the xorg-edgers ppa instructions.
How to install the latest Nvidia drivers on Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr

But version 346 and 355 totally fail?

I will try the uninstaller program and reinstall the 355.82 mentioned today this am and post back.

Woah, im not experienced with nvidia just amd. Does it fail to install saying there isn't a card? Check your dot net runtimes ect. Maby the installer requires dot net and there's an issue preventing installation. Does it even detect the card, has any damage been done to windows before hand? And nvidia cards dont support Linux fully anyway.
It either fails to install the nvidia driver using a driver downloaded from nvidia. Or maybe it installs-writes it to disk and does not work at all.

I ran the uninstaller in safe mode, rebooted and it showed vga adapter.
So then installed the suggested 355.82 driver fresh download, it goes through the install motions, rebooted, and comes up with same error as before, device has been stopped because it reports a problem.

    here are some more pics
    uninstaller

    installer finished, so I reboot

I think whoever made this card (made in china, with no names on it anywhere), put together something as cheap as they could, maybe even re-flashed the chip bios, and cobbled together a driver.
Who knows what the card really is for GPU, could even be a mobile GPU on a pcie desktop card. No downloadable drivers so far have worked, if the driver disc that came with the card ever fails, I could never install the card again in windows.

If i install this driver, then in device manager, right click update, MS will install Driver Version: 9.18.13.4144
but that is all I can do. that driver when searched seems to point to laptops. So I tried downloading nvidia mobile 355 driver, and it also fails.

What do you think, some of these cards are truly fakes.
    What would you do?

I also noticed the core clock for the card is showing a lot lower than what Nvidia says it should be.

Can we have a pic of your card itself too?
You my have the stock cooler or a different one, that's a tell tails sign its fake, it either has the official coolers from various manufacturers or some odd aftermarket cooler. But even then its not certain, you have nothing to lose at this point, take the cooler off and look at the chip, identify what gpu the chip is, if anything it can be used as proof against the seller if it does turn out to be fake.

Not sure why you would want a ddr2 card ?
But if it's a NVidia card the drivers should work if not hacked

I just roll backed the dead driver to VGA, then windows update said it has an optional driver for the card from 08/25/2015.
So I installed that, card in properties looked ok, windows says reboot. One reboot card is not working, windows has again stopped the device due to reported problems.

I found GPU-z program. SO I guess I will install the only driver that works off the disc and see if GPU-z shows anything odd.
