Windows hangs when I insert a disk

So I recently bought a brand new Sony DVD RW SATA drive (Optiarc AD-7240S) and successfully burned a disc yesterday.

Later in the day I inserted a disk to install some software and the drive began to spin up and then just went idle, only my mouse worked and the hdd light was on permanently. I rebooted and tried a brand new disk which did the same thing again.

I have tried reinstalling drivers, using a different SATA socket on the motherboard (Asus M2N-X), changing the boot order and I tried turning off autoplay but none of this helped.

EDIT: I just booted up in XP and the drive spins up and I can read and write data fine so this is a Windows 7 OS problem.

I just dont understand why it worked to burn a disk and then just stopped working the second time I ever used it. Can anyone help me please?

Thanks

Try to update the firmware for it from the manufacturer's website. Pay close attention to any warnings they may have when doing so - like if it needs to be connected to a specific port on the motherboard when doing so etc...

Thanks for the help but I just did that and no luck. One thing to note is the drive does load unscratched disks in windows 7, but even with a minor scratch it freezes. Now in XP I load the same disk (with minor surface scratches) which wouldnt load in Windows 7, into the same drive with no problems, how can this be?!
