    DVD Burn Failure

I'm not able to successfully burn a DVD (Optical Quantum 4.7 GB DVD+R 16X Speed) from an iso file. I've used the Win 7 burner software and imgBurn. I'm having this issue on both of my SATA DVD/CD burners.

The drive model numbers are: Pioneer DVR-216R & TSSTcorp SH-S223Q. I believe the optical drive firmware is the latest.

    The log errors:
Potential 'WaitImmediateIO' Deferred Error - (0/3) - Unknown (Internal Target Failure) (ASC: 0x44,
    ASCQ: 0xD6)
Finalise Disc Failed! - Reason: Unknown (Internal Target Failure) (ASC: 0x44, ASCQ: 0xD6)
Is this a software or hardware issue?

How do you troubleshoot something like this?

    Thanks for the assistance.

    Regards

Maybe you got a bad batch of discs? Have you previously burned discs successfully on either optical drives?

Are you using DVD+ or DVD- dvd's? It looks like you have 2 optical drives one is - and one is +
You are tying to burn to a DVD+ disc on your DVD-RW drive

    My recordable DVDs are +.

I thought that I checked those drives at the time I bought these recordable DVDs to ensure compatibility.

Which drive of the two are you saying is "+" recordable media only and which drive is "-" media only?

Presently, this is what I've got on hand for recordable DVD media: Optical Quantum 4.7 GB DVD+R 16X Speed.

From the failure report it says the Pioneer is -RW and that is the one you had fail to burn to a DVD+ disc
I can't tell what the other drives spec is but you should be able to see it on the drive properties in device manager or from your burning application

    From the Pioneer DVR-216 website:

Are those Inkjet or Lightscribe printable? I've never had any fails using DVD-R and from many years ago when I first started doing any disc burning, the rule of thumb was minus discs always seemed more reliable. You might try burning at a slower speed. What is your history with burning discs?

Yes, the recordable DVD media I'm using is LightScribe capable. I've tried burning with imgBurn at 2x and I get the same errors.

I don't burn that often. I've maybe burned 10 discs (DVD & CD total) in the last three or more years.

These two internal SATA optical drives don't get much use. If they are failing, then they're failing from dust loading.

When I was shopping for media about a year ago, I reviewed the specs and thought I was ordering media that was fully compatible. I think the media is advertised to work, but either the drives are failing due to age or there's some configuration or other OS issue that hasn't been identified.

The Pioneer passes the Microsoft MrFixIt program for DVDs/CDs. The Samsung/TSST doesn't recognize the recordable DVD media as recordable media, but does recognize recordable CD media.

There's a void of tech information out there for these optical drives. I'd like to have a service manual so I could disassemble and test and inspect the boards and components.

Have you used those particular discs before now or are they a new purchase? Like I said, I only use minus type discs. I did some searching and everything says those discs can be used in a non-lightscribe burner. Try some DVD-R and see how that goes. Based on what you say about the Samsung drive not liking that flavor disc, they might be garbage discs.

I've burned the first few out of this 100-pk successfully. Now, all I get are duds. I can't rule out the system or the optical drives. I've only used about 10 blank DVDs from this pack. Perhaps they are bad now. I've been looking for some Verbatim LightScribe DVD-R 4.7 GB media, but I get the impression that they're not being produced any longer.

When I load the Samsung with a blank DVD, it sees something written on the disk. Not the Pioneer with the same disk. Perhaps these drives are failing due to age. They're about six years old.
