If memory serves me correctly, plugging in an external keyboard does not deactivate the internal keyboard on a laptop. That means that the laptop's internal keyboard control processor is still active. If it is malfunctioning, it could still be activating the shift keys as you are typing on an external keyboard.

Note than an external keyboard has it's own keyboard processor which converts the scanned key codes into USB, which goes to the keyboard driver for decoding. Most keyboards are built that way. On a laptop, the keyboard is "dumb". There are no electronics on the keyboard itself. The controller is in the guts of the laptop.

An easy test to tell if it is really your keyboard, or the controller is to partially disassemble your laptop (carefully), and disconnect the ribbon cable that leads from the keyboard to the laptop. Be careful not to tear it. Then plug in an external keyboard and power up the laptop. If you still have your shift problem, it is the laptop's controller - you'll have to replace the motherboard, or a keyboard control board if it has one. If you don't have your shift problem anymore, replace the keyboard and reassemble (carefully).

Opening a laptop is not for the faint of heart. There are probably videos on Youtube for your particular model to follow, but it still has to be done carefully. If you don't feel comfortable, then by all means take the laptop to qualified service personnel.

Hi guys, sorry for not updating on my situation. I removed the internal laptop keyboard, and just used an external USB keyboard and it works perfectly. It turns out the laptop keyboard is no longer functional and is due for replacement. Thanks for all your suggestions and help.

That's wonderful, hassannoob! I'm glad to hear that you were able to isolate the problem and that you have at least found a temporary solution with the external keyboard until such a time as you can get the main keyboard replaced!

Thanks for providing us with your feedback; its always quite helpful to do so!

If you would be so kind, try to remember to mark the thread as "solved," on your way out.
