Looking at it's specs below (or online), which OS would you suggest?
I want the best performance, but also be relatively secure and overally, get the best of all I can.

I also took a test-drive with Windows Vista SP2. Performance is well... okay (not good, but tolerable) not nearly as good as XP. What's most annoying is that just like Windows 7 (although not that much) it heats up my notebook a lot. As if I was running an Antivirus scan all the time. Stuff like trustedinstaller, and search indexer keep using my CPU and theres always something.

What should I use?
Hi bro, thank you very much for your topic :-) I am just thinking about same.

Win 7:
- I did search on Google and there really are some drivers issuses so I am not going to use Win 7. I really donīt want to experience those issues by myself

Vista:
- like you have said, Vista is constantly doing someting (putting stress on RAM and CPU). I have really no idea what the hell is it doing. So my opinion: Bye bye Vista :-D. I have bought from my sister used same spec. Compaq 6720s (same spec. as yours). Plus I have ordered 2x 2GB RAM.
- HP in state I received was running Vista (so far trying to run Vista :-)). This laptop came with original HP recovery tools and Vista Home Basic (grey badge sticker). So there is on hard disc drive D (8GB of HP recovery tools and back-ups). Hmm, it will be good feeling to put in Win XP DVD and run installation and to format all those nasty recovery data
- my last idea: mayebee it would help to have latest BIOS version. Maybee that is the reason, why is Vista so hard on CPU and using so much RAM. I plan to update BIOS after fresh Win XP installation.

Win XP:
- that is my choice. Yeah, its old, no further Microsoft updates. But hey, XP runs great on laptop of such a configuration. And as long as you are using some good Firewall and Antivirus (Antispyware) software, you should be safe I think. And of course, donīt look at porn websites with Win XP :-D

BTW: Itīs just 3 AM at night, 3 hours ago I have just finished complete HP 6720s disassembly (I cleaned heatsing wents). To get dust plug out, you unfortunately net to get out the motherboard). So I have also changed Cmos battery while I was there :-). Original one was 9 years old and it still had 3,2V. But I have replaced it, to make sure it gonna last next 9 years

At the time, I got laptop with Vista on it, it had following BIOS:
ROM Date : 11-20-2007
ROM BIOS Version: F.07

I did checked on HP support website, that there is at last some BIOS version from year 2008.
