headset one prong 3 ring to 2 prongs

umm I'm not sure if this is the right place to put this

I am looking for someone to help me understand what I need to get my headset working on my pc
I have a pc that only takes 2 prong heaset input (one for headphones, one for mic)
however my new headset I got for christmas has 1 silver prong with 3 black rings output

I figured I would need a headset spliter to split the my one prong into 2 prongs
how ever I'm not sure what I really need when it comes down to technical names like 2.5mm, 3.5mm, female, male and such.

when my parents went to walmart to get a splitter walmart suggested a 2 holes to one prong(asuming that the one prong is the output)

so can someone suggest a link to a cheap headset splitter for me or explain to me what I need
    thanks

here is the pics Imgur: The most awesome images on the Internet
the first one is the splitter the second one is my cord to my headset
and you can kinda see the first one has two rings

You need a 3.5mm (1/8") Y adapter that splits the headset and mic to standard 1/8" TRS plugs.
Here is an example from Amazon
Amazon.com: CablesOnline 3.5mm TRRS 4-Position Female to Dual 3-Position 3.5mm TRS Male Headset Splitter Adapter (IP-AY12C): Electronics

ya i ordered it and it doesn't seem to work I can plug in in normally and it only gives output to one of my ear phones
the other ear phone and mic does not work

it also looks like its sticking out a bit but when i jam in in farther it doesn't do anything at all
it has 3 rings on both ends of the headset cord.
one end going to the headset and one end going to the computer(supposedly)

From your description of the splitter's performance, it sounds like the mic plug was plugged into the headphone jack.

The plugs on the splitter should be marked.

    sorry I've been busy
    I mean't the mic still doesn't work
is it a driver issue? maybe the headset isn't compatible with windows?
I think it might be a xbox 360 or xbox one headset
