Printer not found by Word--then can't be reinstalled

I'm running Office 2003 on Win 7 x64.

For the past few days, when I started Word 2003, I got a message that "the printer has not yet responded, but the Microsoft Office program may be able to proceed without printer information. Do you want to continue to wait?" --this was before I'd even loaded a document, let alone tried to print anything. But when I clicked no, after a short delay, Word worked normally.

Today, it could find no printers at all -- the selected printer line was blank, but the dropdown menu showed all my printers, just did nothing when I tried to click on any of them. Find Printer just brought up a "Find in the Directory" error saying "The active directory domain services is currently unavailable." Microsoft's FixIt, as usual, did nothing.

So I did a Web search for that error message, and was advised to uninstall and reinstall my printers. Which created a new problem: Both my printers are connected via USB. When I reinstalled my default printer, the choice of connections included two USB options; I chose the 01. But when i went to reinstall my other printer, no USB options were listed. And when I try to print to my default printer from a non-Office program, such as this browser, I get "An error occurred while printing". I can, however, print to PDF.

Any suggestions?
