WHS, I think what he's got is an OS with AMD motherboard drivers and trying to run it on an Intel system. A virus is always a possibility, but those drivers are his biggest problem right now, I think.

Maybe you are right. But crashing in safe mode is a bit unusual also.

A clean install will help either or both problems if he will wipe the disk first.

Citrus6745 do you have backups of your personal files on an external source? If not, this will help you get them.

Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console

Emergency Kit - save your files from a dead OS

I can put my old components back into the computer and try to copy the files into an external hard drive. If ever I have a problem doing so, I will post it here ASAP. I will be receiving the external hard drive and Windows 7 installation disk tomorrow. If the old components work(AMD Motherboard and CPU), let me know if there is anything I can do while they are in. (maybe any old drivers/OS to uninstall, or run virus test?)

The 2 links above will enable you to get your files off without rebuilding your old machine. You will need an external source to copy them to.

Moin guys, I think essenbe is right here
I did run into the same issue a couple times by now, same symptoms - no way around, a new install has been the choice

btw: I dont think its about the cpu brand, i swapped diffrent cpu a couple times and it worked out fine, as well as some mobos with same cpu brand didnt. Maybe its just some north- and/or south-bridge drivers which lead to fail here, buts thats only a guess

Wont a program such as disk digger bring back files that were on formatted drives, or might those files be corrupted or overwritten?

This may or may not work. Many times the recovered files are corrupted. It's a matter of trying.

Before booting my computer I opened cmd.exe. This can be found at the automatic repair failed screen for advanced options. I opened notepad.exe pressed file>save as and all the files on my HDD were there. I coppied everything I wanted onto the external drive.
