Windows 7: WD Passport Crash, Multiple Errors While Attempting Recovery

Hello again!

It is not clear which model of the My Passport you have, is it perhaps a My Passport Essential model? The model's name would give me much more information.

About the sounds you are hearing, it could be that the disk is spinning down then again spinning up? Like it cannot get enough power? That still sounds like a hardware problem to me, but I understand you have managed to connect it to show up at least in Disk Management. I see the drive is visible there without a partition table.

It is so that if an external device is misbehaving, uninstalling it from within Device Manager and letting it reinstall itself, could potentially help the device perform better. It shouldn't cause any more additional damage in comparison to the continuous replugging that has already been done.

The SES driver is required as a special communications channel (SCSI) between the PC and the hard drive to enable certain features. Still, the external WD drive is supposed to function even without it. You could try installing it using the help of this WD KB: Support Answers.

I would additionally ask you to test the most basic troubleshooting step, since the drive is somewhat visible in Disk Management. Please check if it is also visible in the dedicated diagnostics tool, the WD Data Lifeguard Support. If it is, please view the SMART values and do a Quick test and post screenshots of the results.

I suspect that there will be an error, most probably due to a hardware issue, but we need to see if I am perhaps wrong or not.

Good luck!

Hi, CKWD. Hope you had a good weekend. Thanks for coming back again to help me. Here's what I've got:

The external is just a My Passport. It's an older model, before they started attaching extra names to it. The model (P/N) number on the back of the drive is WDBBEP0010BBK-01. Apologies for not posting it when it didn't show in the screenshots. Please note the model on the back of the drive is not the same as the one listed in Lifeguard. I'm not sure if that matters but I noticed and wanted to point it out.

I don't think the noise has to do with power; it sounds more like the head is stuck. It's also beginning to grind a little today as I was running the other tests. Have it unplugged now hoping I'm not making matters worse using it.

I uninstalled the driver, disconnected, and reconnected the external. Windows' attempt to install the device failed. The error in Device Manager has remained the same (Code 28).

Lifeguard sees the drive, lists the SMART Status as Not Available, and as you suspected, a Quick Test fails. I've attached the screenshots.

What are the doctor's orders?

I see the model now.

The doctor's diagnosis unfortunately is that the drive has developed too many bad sectors, as seen on the second screenshot, showing the Quick test error, and additionally, it obviously has a hardware problem, judging by the description of the sound you gave, although I already suspected it. :/

All of this means that the drive is too damaged to be tested by a software or fixed by yourself. My advice still remains to use professional data recovery help for your data, as anything else could further damage the drive and make the data more irretrievable.

This is the best option with most promising results. :/

CKWD, I appreciate all your help. Unfortunately, I had a feeling that would be your diagnosis, so I went ahead and got in touch with a few of the recovery companies in the link you gave to get an idea of how they work and what the turnaround time will be. I'm cautiously optimistic that at least some of the data will be recovered, but we'll have to see.

Again, thank you and Jumanji so much for your help. It was a blessing to find this forum and such awesome people with great advice. You guys are awesome.

You're welcome!

I'm sorry there isn't anything more we could do at this points. :/

Still, the WD data recovery partners have all the firmware and technology info on WD drives, so I hope they will be able to help you accordingly.

Bets of luck!
