Choice of WD WD1001FALS 1TB hard drive for system backups.

Hello the Forum, having been negligent in making periodic backups, and reading about SSD total failures, am contemplating what method to use. I am seeing a number of WD model WD1001FALS available on ebay at an affordable price ~$40. These are 1TB sata2 hdd Caviar Black model. Currently, I am running two 480GB corsairs SSD (running great). The 1TB will be sufficient. Being retired and of limited budget, I figure to buy one a month for about 4 months, then rotate hdd selection among the 4. Yes, these are used. but will receive very light use. they are the black model, and they do park the heads while not touching the disc surface.

This first one I will mount in the computer, but will get a front panel mobile mount.

Anyway, any known problems with these drives? A better budget minded choice?

Thanks. Stan.

I don't know if I would buy a hard drive off of eBay, but that's just me.

You can get a brand new 1 TB drive for about $60 if you buy the green or blue series WD drives. I realize that you are on a limited budget, but I think you would be better off in the long run if you purchased a new drive with a warranty.

Hello Melon Head, thanks for the response. Even watch Gallagher's Death by Melon video? Just curious.

My goof, I paid $18. There are a lot of this model just now. It like a lot of business / commercial machines are
being upgraded. I can certainly given them an extensive workout, and return it if there is a problem. Even used,
at let say $20, it gets used for one or two hours three times a year, cycling 4 drives thru once a month backup.
Even if one fails, it is not a total loss. I see I can get the same drive new for $57. Might keep one more in the computer (new in this case) for weekly incremental backup .

But there is also a question of the drive model. My limited understanding is this model, the black, are better built drives. Non contact head parking, but other quality issues too.

Anyone have good / bad experiences with them?

Thanks, Stan

All WD model drives are good, but each type is made for a different purpose, you don`t need blacks for backups or images, blues will do fine.

Blacks are meant for fast data aquisition, like for games etc. 7200 RPM

Raptors were once all the rage at 10,000 rpm if you could afford one, I thought they were useless.
