"Touching something metal" is of no value unless that "something metal" has an electrical path to ground. If you touched something like a screwdriver, then some of your static charge might be shared with that screwdriver. It is also possible that the "something metal" has more of a static charge than you had and by touching it, you now have more of a static charge built up.

Either use a grounded wrist strap (as mentioned in posts 3 and 5) or takes sdowney717's approach on post 19.
