    You need

    Case
    Power Supply
    Motherboard
    CPU with Heatsink/Cooler
    RAM
    Hard Drive
    Video Card *
    Optical Drive (DVD drive)
    Monitor
    Keyboard
    Mouse
    Speakers (optional)
License for Windows : if you choose to run Windows.

    * The video might be integrated into the mobo depending upon which mobo you get. Also, the mobo will almost surely have a Network Interface as well as onboard sound these days.

If you get a retail boxed CPU....it comes with a heatsink/fan included. If you get an OEM CPU, you likely have to buy this separate.

Just a question for when the day comes and I build my own system. There were ten items on his list. Is that the entire list of parts needed for a system?
Well, it depends on what you need, but the list goes something like this:

    MoBo
    Compatible CPU
    Compatible RAM
    Hard Drive(s)
    PSU
    Video Card
    Optical Drives
    Case
    Keyboard & Mouse
    Monitor

Plus any extras you might need (Sound Card, Card Reader etc.)

Edit: PParks beat me to it. lol
