    Why is DDR2 RAM for Intel motherboards so expensive?


    As the title says, why the heck are DDR2 sticks for Intel motherboards so expensive? I mean, you could find a 2GB stick for about $8 but if you search for a 4GB stick the price spikes up to $50 or more. I'm asking this question because I'm looking to revive this old HP a6000 to use as my daily driver because my main computer is broken but if I want to revive it I would need 8GB or at least 6GB of RAM to do work on, because I'm a very heavy multitasker, but I can't due to the price.

    Also one other thing I've noticed is that there are "AMD" sticks and "Intel" sticks and the price difference is huge between those two. I always thought RAM would compatible with any motherboard as long as it is the right DDR and the right form factor. Why is that?

    I believe the answer is that since DDR3 and DDR4 RAM is the most common used RAM for current motherboards DDR2 is in limited supply because of low demand. It's either no longer made or made only in limited quantities.

    AMD and Intel memory are the same.
    AMD calls it DDR memory and Intel PC Memory. They are the same with a factor of 8. For example, DDR2 800 = PC 6400.
    The price is due to the fact that DDR, DDR2 (and soon DDR3) are no longer manufactured. Here in Brazil, we find old memory from computers that are disassembler and sold as used parts.
