I have heard of BIOS versions 4-5 years or older having a hard time picking up SATA DVD drives but not anything newer and even the older BIOS usually don't have a problem with IDE drives.

You might see if theres an update for your BIOS and see what interface your DVD drive is...SATA or IDE

EDIT" I misread you question. You're saying the BIOS always picks it up....but Windows "sometimes" does not....

You may want to go to "Disk Management" and see if it's set up right there.

Is it showing in "Disk Management"? (Right click "my computer" and go to manage - then disk management.) Does it show up in there? How about "device manager" is there a DVD drive listed there?

Has this always been the case or has it been happening after upgrading to Windows 7?

Also, welcome to the forum! and please fill out your system specs

Since it only happens "sometimes" I would first get into your case and check all power and data connections.

Since it only happens "sometimes" I would think a power supply, or cable problem also.

Think about installing the latest driver next time it shows up also.

I can't think of anything that would make it not show up sometimes but show up other times besides power or data connections.

Is it a Sony or a TSST drive? Have a look around other similar threads...
