printer prints gray

Hi everyone,
I have tried for hours to get my printer to print text in black but it continues to print in gray which is very difficult to read. I have my printer hooked directly into my usb port. I have tried to verify how much ink is left in the black cartridge on my HP Photosmart 2575 printer but haven't been able to find where to do that. Can anyone please help?
Thanks
meajha

After you follow Kari's advice, check to make sure that you are not printing in "econo mode" or something similar. Most printers, including HP, (I have an HP), have a setting to conserve on ink when not printing important documents. In my HP, it is found under "finishing touches"
