    Looking to buy new laptop.

Around ~$600 bucks, decent specs, AMD or Intel, don't really care.

    The catch?

    9-pin RS-232 port is a must.

RS-232 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is what you are talking about...finding that on a Modern laptop is going to be a challenge (I believe)

Serial Port is 9 pin RS-232.

Since I've never used one I can't be sure on how well they work but there is the option of USB to Serial Port Adapter

I'm always weary of USB adapters...

    I'll keep looking though.

    Thanks.

Our Cisco network guy uses a USB to serial adapter to connect to all of the Cisco gear in our office with his laptop and it works just fine for him under Vista.

I agree with that, I usually try to get the real part before I go to adapters. With a serial port it may be very difficult to find on a new laptop with one though.

If you get a laptop with an expresscard slot or something you can get an adaptor... expresscard accessoris do not stickout as much as usb adaptors.
otherwise, you should problably look refurbished.
