Windows 7 - DVD that Win 7 likes?

I've been without DVD since I installed Win 7 in late October. The drive works fine in another computer running XP and ran fine on this one with XP and Vista. I was going to format and go back to XP but after trying out Ubuntu 9.04 from the disc it reactivated the old Ubuntu boot loader and Win 7 doesn't like it so now I can't even boot from the Win 7 DVD to fix the MBR. If I can't find a DVD burner that WORKS with Win 7 then my hard drive is stuck with what it has forever. I've tried every fix I can find posted here and on other sites to no avail. I'm willing to buy another reasonably priced drive if I know for sure that it is definitely Win 7 compatible. Any suggestions for one from Newegg.com?

Basically, everything will be compatible. Few drives use drivers not compatible with 7. Just avoid the LG drives, on account of the Bluebird on them. I just bought a new DVD burner last week, and it works great and was cheap.

Thanks for the suggestion. My only problem with that particular drive is that it has no reviews yet. I am thinking maybe a SATA drive could possibly be better than IDE in my case. One of my HD's is SATA and has no issues at all.

In that case, try this drive. I personally own a drive almost identical to this one.

That one is IDE. I'm really open to trying SATA just in case for some reason IDE is at the root of my issue.

This has apparently been addressed. I just bought a new LG Super Multi Blue drive and there is no sign of Bluebird. It seems LG released a firmware update to remove it from the drives that have it.

That's cool. However, personally, I do not want the hassle of upgrading my firmware. The old drives still have it on. So, I will never buy a used LG, and I will be very hesitant to buy an LG drive in the next 8 months or so.

Thanks guys. I went ahead and ordered the Lite-On in the link in my post #5. I wanted to grab it now while the deal is still on. I searched around some more and the reviews seemed to be good just about everywhere. I hope going to SATA will be a smart move. At least it'll be later technology than the old drive from 2006.

Not trying to pick a fight or anything, but let me understand this. He lost his software that allows him to play DVD's? Not a hardware issue? But he needs to replace his drive?

On both of the upgrades that I have done (Win98 to XP, and now Vista to Win 7, and I'm NOT an expert). When the new OS is installed the software that came with the computer from the manufacter to play DVD's/Bluray is/was lost. Luckily this time around, I just went to the manufacter's(HP) website. I looked for my model number, and they had ALL of the former software for Vista as well as the Win 7 versions, for NO cost. I had my Bluray and DVD's playing in no time.

If this doesn't work, then I'm sorry I suggested it.

I bought a new LG drive and Bluebird never apperared before any updates. Go for LG G22 series one - either with Lightscribe or without - that would probably be the "N" model.
