    Broken Graphics Card

Hey guys, just got a quick question

Is a broken graphics card enough to make a computer turn itself off right after being turned on with no other hardware interaction?

It's possible. Yes. Depends on the nature of the malfunction.

The nature of the malfunction was the fan melting the heatsink is warped and broken at the point where it secures onto the card. It's a GeForce 6600 by the way

Yup, got one ... had to replace the heatsink and fan. Without a working fan the card will overheat and shut off. Hopefully the card has not been damaged by the heat?

The thermal sensors will likely trigger a shut down.

If you didn't have any artifacting before you discovered the error you might be lucky.

I doubt it's still working, the computer shuts off within seconds of pressing the on button. Surely you could get 20-30 seconds or something without a fan?

It all depends on the GPU's thermal protection, I've had cards survive under dust and with blown fans for lengthy periods... so good luck!

LMAO....... that's a first for me

if it was hot enough to do that, it could well of been hot enough to melt the solder points on the card in effect fusing them together, which will result in an instant shorting of the system...

Yeah I think I'll just replace the card and see if the computer starts up after that. I can get another for $50
