Problems with DVD drive disappearing

hi

I recently purchased a AMD Phenom X4 965 and an Asus M3N72-T Deluxe 780a. I have had a number of problems with this system but i have managed to rectifiy these. Yesterday 2 of my HDD's disappeared along with my DVD drive from My computer and Device Manager. My HDD's re-appeared quite quickly and so did the DVD drive. However every so often the DVD drive will disappear especially after being brought out of sleep mode. Refreshing devices in Device Manager does occassionaly work but is not 100%.

Ive read quite a number of other threads about this kind of problem and most of the suggestions have been to install the Intel Matrix Manager however I cant do that because my processor is AMD. Can I?

I thought it may also have something to do with the sata settings in the bios. I had problems with installing windows when i set the mode to AHCI so i set it back to IDE mode (however this disables 2 out of my 6 sata ports). Windows seemed to take for ever to install which tends to suggest problems with the motherboard.

Some help on how to stop this problem with the DVD drive would be good and if anyone knows anything about how I can get the extra 2 sata ports working would also be helpful. I have been tearing my hair out over this and it has become very annoying. Asus support has been incredibly S**** and im today is the last day that i can send it back without any questions asked so a swift response would be incredibly helpful.

thanks.

Hi

Welcome to 7 forums

I feel sorry to hear about your problem. I see that you have already tried switching IDE & AHCI modes in the BIOS.

I guess, you have a PC. In this regard, I would suggest you to try resetting your BIOS. This may fix the issue. Meantime, I will try to find out some other solutions !!!

I have already tried to reset the bios to no avail. I was thinking of trying to switch from IDE mode to AHCI mode but i dont know if that will mean i will have to reinstall windows and i dont particularly want to seeing as it has been a struggle to get this far.

I know it is not the DVD drive itself because i bought another one and the same thing happens.

thx

Yeah, then you may have to try switching the modes from IDE AHCI

Do i have to install any extra drivers for AHCI and if so where do i get them? The Asus site is not very helpful

You can just go to BIOS page and switch the mode

Yes i have already done that but what i am asking is do i have to install any other drivers relating to AHCI during the installation of windows or after. I say this becasue i know in previous versions of Windows these drivers have been required to install it.

If i do need some drivers for it where do i get them? Asus didnt help me at all, the only software they provided is a utility for graphics and a new bios which i have already flashed it with

Thank you anyway. I seem to have sorted it out now however there is as usual another problem. I have a second sata dvd drive that i have connected to the motherboard. However it is shown as a CD drive in My computer but in Device Manager it is shown as a DVD/RW drive. Any ideas on how to get it to be seen as a DVD drive. I have already updated the firmware and drivers for it so i doubt that that is the problem.

thanks

That's good to know.

I have come across such issues which were fixed during the next restart. But, I guess you may have restarted several times by now.

* Try unpluging the and re-connecting the drive to your motherboard.
* In addition, check if your drive is able to play DVD disks or only CD's
