You may need to download and install the latest intel matrix storage manager software/driver because AHCI would be enabled in your bios, and what happens during installation of Windows 7 is Windows 7 installs the Intel driver, but for correct functionality you need to install the intel matrix storage manager after installation is complete if you dont it will cause the problems with your DVD DRIVE.

You will find it at the intel site - http://downloadcenter.intel.com/default.aspx
Select chipsets - desktop chipsets - select chipset - skip OS - select drivers(10) - select intel(R) matrix storage manager 8.9.0.1023 - download and install.
There is a mix up with download site so you need to skip OS to get to it now - once there you will see it supports Windows 7.

You can also find the driver here -select drivers than OS :
GA-EP45-UD3P (rev. 1.0) - GIGABYTE - Product - Motherboard - Overview

Sorry for intruding here.

Whest, is this for Intel only or is there an option for nvidia chipsets and amd processors? I have a A8N Sli Premium, nforce4 chipset with a AMD Athlon 64, and have been having problems with my DVD-Rom as well (it had been working previously to a System Restore).

There is a fix for nforce boards the specs are listed on the page :
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976972
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
The filter one has been working for some people but I'm not sure the first one should be used as its problem specific, but if you setup up a restore point you would be safe to try it I guess. I wouldnt recomend it though as its usb related - only as a last ditch attempt to fix it maybe. All i can tell you is its related to the storage driver, and you might be better of trying the latest nforce chipset drivers if the filter one doesnt work - use a restore point for it also, or export the folder in the registry.

Another suggestion might be to try a earlier version of the chipset drivers that shipped with the PC - go to your motherboards site or if you have a laptop go to the manufactures site - support- downloads - type in or select from a list the name of your mobo or laptop.
You could try the xp or vista drivers - to resolve the OS mismatch to get them to install do the following - also set up a restore point -

To install a driver OR program in compatibility mode - right click the setup.exe file - click properties - click compatibility - check run in compatibility with vista/xp etc - check run as administrator - leave the rest blank. Start setup.exe and install.
